Can You Take Real Estate Classes on the Weekend?

Kaplan Real Estate Education

As a busy professional, student, or parent, you may find yourself scrambling for time during the week. Making a much-needed career change may seem just out of reach. Fortunately, many flexible options exist for completing real estate prelicensing education, making it possible for you to take classes during the time that works best for you—weekends and evenings included. Many busy parents and professionals have successfully launched their careers in real estate without sacrificing their existing schedules.

Can I Take Real Estate Classes on the Weekend?

Yes, many states make it possible to fulfill prelicensing education requirements on the weekend either by taking online classes or in-person weekend classes. Requirements vary by state, so make sure to check your state’s real estate commission website to see what options are available to you.

If you need to take in-person classes, you will want to look for courses with schedules offered on the weekend. For example, North Carolina requires all prospective brokers to attend in-person classes and many in-person weekend courses are available. Take your time with your research, and make sure the in-person course you choose not only works with your schedule but also meets your state’s credit hour requirements.

If you determine that real estate online courses will meet your state’s requirements, you can build your own schedule on the weekends. Online courses work well for many busy people since you can complete classes at home during your spare time. Taking an online course also cuts down on time lost traveling to and from a course location, which means you’ll have more time and energy for other weekend activities. However, this flexibility might prove difficult to manage, as it will be up to you to hold yourself accountable for completing coursework and class sessions.

Whether you take an in-person weekend course or an online course, having a plan for success will start you off on the right track. Before jumping into your real estate prelicensing education, take a look at the steps below.

Planning for Success with Weekend Real Estate Classes

1. Find out if you will need to take an in-person or online course.

Figuring out whether you will be taking an in-person course or an online course will help you map out your schedule for the coming weeks. In-person courses will have set times and locations, while online courses will provide you with structured classes but rely on you to schedule them. Find your bearings by identifying which class format works for your state and your needs.

2. Use a calendar to set aside time on the weekends.

Once you’ve enrolled in an in-person or online course, get a calendar and start mapping out your class time. You can use a physical calendar or an online one; some people find it helpful to use both versions as the physical calendar can help you visualize the days and weeks ahead and the online one can send you reminders as times of your classes near. Mapping out class time is especially important if you are taking an online course. Be realistic but also firm. Make sure that you don’t overwhelm yourself by scheduling too much class time in too short of a period. Quitting and then starting again can actually end up taking longer than if you had scheduled less class time and kept your stress level lower. Keeping to a steady and realistic weekend class schedule will help you complete your prelicensing education in a timely manner.

3. Tell your family and friends about your weekend schedule.

Your friends and family can play an important role in your success. To make completing your weekend real estate education easier, you’ll need their support and understanding. Explain why you are working towards a real estate license and why it’s important to you. If you anticipate having to reschedule social engagements or needing quiet time in the afternoon, let them know and plan ahead of time for it. They might even cheer you on and provide you with more accountability.

4. Give yourself an incentive.

Spending your precious weekend time in classes can be tough, especially if you already have a busy weekday schedule. Give yourself an incentive for completing your real estate prelicensing classes on time. Incentives don’t have to be big or pricey. For example, after completing half of your classes on time, you might reward yourself with the latest book by your favorite author or a trip to your favorite ice cream parlor. Pat yourself on the back for taking a big step towards accomplishing your career goals.
