How to Obtain a Residential Contractor’s License

A. Enroll in How to Pass the Minnesota Contractor Licensing Exam course as no education is required to take the Contractor exam in Minnesota
B. Register to take Minnesota Contractor exam here
C. Pass Contracting Exam
D. Apply for license

How to Renew a Residential Contractor’s license

A. Renewals are due March 31st to the DOLI, best practice is have the education completed by March 1st for a timely renewal. The QP (Qualifying Person) records expire on based on the approval date. Continuing education must be completed by the expiration date of the QP Record.
B. Course content must demonstrate significant intellectual or practical content and deal with matters directly related to residential construction, workforce safety, or the business of running a company in the residential construction industry.
C. Complete 14 hours of education to include a 1 hour course related to energy codes or energy conservation measures applicable to residential structures and 1 hour of business management. Please review the state website here.
D. Individuals can determine their qualifying personal identification number by going to the state website here and searching by name.

Accreditation

Each course has been submitted pursuant to Minnesota Stat. S326.87 subd. 1 and S82.22 subd. 13 for residential building contractor and remodeler continuing education. Some courses have also been submitted for real estate continuing education. The only course covering the EPA requirement for lead containment training is the Lead-based Paint Renovation, Repair & Painting course.
