Steps for Obtaining Massachusetts License Reciprocity

  1. Earn your Massachusetts real estate salesperson license:
    • Complete 40 hours of education 
    • Submit a real estate salesperson license application that includes three candidate endorsements 
    • Pass the Massachusetts State and National Exam within two years of completing your education 
    • Ensure that your supervising broker has an active Connecticut broker license 
  2. Apply for Connecticut license reciprocity through the Connecticut Real Estate Commission

NOTE: If you obtain your Connecticut license by reciprocity with Massachusetts, you need to complete both Connecticut and Massachusetts continuing education to maintain your license.

Steps for Rhode Island Reciprocity (Applies to Non-Rhode Island Residents)

  • Step 1: Earn your Massachusetts license. Rhode Island has a reciprocity agreement with Massachusetts and Connecticut, meaning that when you hold a Massachusetts or Connecticut license and are not a resident of Rhode Island, you can also get a Rhode Island license. Here are the steps to earn your Massachusetts license with Kaplan’s guidance: 
    • Be a U.S. citizen who is 18 years or older and pass a background check 
    • Complete 40 hours of Massachusetts real estate licensing education 
    • Complete and submit a real estate salesperson license application that includes 3 candidate endorsements 
    • Pass the Massachusetts real estate exam within 2 years of completing your education 
  • Step 2: After you have obtained your Massachusetts real estate license, you must take an additional Rhode Island-specific course, a 3-hour Lead Poisoning/Lead Hazard Mitigation course, and provide a certificate of completion with your application 
  • Step 3: Obtain a Certificate of Errors and Omissions Insurance, a criminal history record from both Rhode Island and your home state, and a Letter of Good Standing from your home state’s licensing authority
  • Step 4: Apply for reciprocity with the state of Rhode Island
