Pre-licensing Education Note
The Massachusetts Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons requires license applicants to successfully complete 40 hours of pre-licensing education—at least 21 hours of which must be live online instruction. The remaining hours can be completed online on your own schedule and in any order.
Massachusetts Licensing Requirements
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Complete 40 hours of pre-licensing education, at least 21 hours of which must be live online instruction
- Pass the licensing exam (includes both state and general portions) within 2 years of taking education
- Obtain 3 complete candidate endorsements from individuals unrelated to the candidate
- Complete the licensing application

The fees associated with becoming a real estate agent in Massachusetts include an estimated $97–$425 for the required prelicensing education consisting of 40 hours; $85 for the salesperson exam fee ($54 for veterans); $103–$150 for first license prorated based on your birthday; and $12 for the PSI licensing fee to print your license.
If you need to retake the exam, it costs $54. Once licensed, you must renew it every two years on your birthday for $103.
