South Dakota Broker Associate Prelicensing Education Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted alien.
  • Be a resident of South Dakota.
  • Pursuant to ruling 36-21A-30.1 broker associate applicants must have successfully completed 116 hours of education.
  • Pass background check and submit fingerprints to state.
  • Pass State and National exam and within 60 days submit application for licensure.
  • Submit application to be approved for licensure and ensure that includes signed request along the application of the Supervising Real Estate Broker. 

South Dakota Responsible Broker Prelicensing Education Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted alien.
  • Be a resident of South Dakota.
  • Pursuant with ruling 36-21A-31. Responsible brokers must complete 116 hours of education as well as a 24-hour responsible broker course.
  • Have been actively licensed for 2 years as a salesperson or broker’s associate, or a combination thereof.
  • Pass background check and submit fingerprints to state.
  • Pass State and National exam.
  • Submit application to be approved with the state.

South Dakota Broker Associate Post-Licensing Education Requirements

  • Broker associates are required to complete 60 hours of education within two cycles of renewal.
  • Consists of two renewal cycles Postlicense Period 1 & Postlicense Period 2.
  • Postlicense Period 1 begins once a new broker associate receives their initial license and must be completed between the current license year and the following license year.
  • Postlicense Period 2 begins on January 1st, the year after a new broker associate completes Postlicense period 1 and must be completed with the following two license cycles. During this time, a new broker associate must also complete 30 hours of required education to include the following topics:
    • Real Estate Contracts
    • Real Estate License Law
    • Fair Housing
    • Ethics
    • Environmental Issues
    • Antitrust
    • The Americans with Disabilities Act
    • Brokerage Services

South Dakota Broker Associate & Responsible Broker Continuing Education Requirements

  • Renewal periods are every two years.
  • Pursuant with ruling 36-21A-62 licensees must complete 24 hours of education, 12 of which must be in Required Subject Areas as follows:
    • Real Estate Contracts
    • Real Estate License Law
    • Fair Housing
    • Ethics
    • Environmental Issues
    • Antitrust
    • The American with Disabilities Act
    • Brokerage Services
