How Do I Get My Missouri Real Estate License?

Kaplan Real Estate Education

If you would like to start a real estate career in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, or any other city in the state, you'll need to earn your Missouri real estate license. There are a few things you’ll need to do in order to accomplish that, including completing education and passing an exam.

The process of becoming a licensed real estate agent is different in each state. The state of Missouri has a few unique requirements outlined in the steps below.

Steps to Become a Missouri Real Estate Agent

1. Be at least 18 years old.

To qualify, you need to be at least 18 years old and have had your fingerprints taken by an approved, statewide vendor so that a background check may be completed.

2. Complete the required prelicensing education.

You’ll need to complete a total of 72 hours of prelicensing education in order to earn your license. This education consists of two sections: a 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course and a 24-hour Missouri Real Estate Practice (MREP) course. You must finish the 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course before taking your licensing exam, but you may take the MREP course before or after the exam (as long as it’s after you’ve completed the pre-exam course).

If you are a licensed attorney or if you have your real estate license in a different jurisdiction, there are exceptions. Take a look at the Missouri Real Estate Commission website to learn more.

3. Pass both portions of the Missouri Real Estate Salesperson Exam.

In addition to completing your education requirements, you’ll need to take and pass the national and state portions of the Missouri Real Estate Salesperson exam. This exam is administered by computer at PSI test centers by appointment only. A passing score for the national portion is 70 correct answers out of 100 total, and the passing score for the state portion of the exam is 30 correct answers out of 40 questions total.

4. Submit your application.

Finally, you’ll need to submit your application for a salesperson’s license to the Missouri Real Estate Commission within six months of the date that you completed your 48-hour pre-exam course. To apply for your license, you’ll need to follow the instructions that are provided on the reverse side of your passing score report that you receive after passing your exam.
