Read about how to become a real estate agent and launch your career.

If you're considering starting a real estate career in Kansas, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Kansas City, Lawrence, Olathe, Overland Park, Topeka, or any other city in the state. You'll need to earn a Kansas real estate license.

To get your real estate license in Kansas, you must:

While the process to become a real estate agent is similar in most states, each state has unique steps and education requirements that must be followed. The four steps to becoming a Kansas real estate agent are as follows:

Step 1: Complete Educational Licensing Courses

How many education hours and which course you’ll need to complete vary depending on if you are licensed in another state or not.

  • 30 hours for the Principles of Real Estate (not required for those licensed in another state).
  • 30 hours for the Kansas Practice course.

Your education course(s) must be completed within 12 months of you submitting your real estate license application to the KREC.

Step 2: Pass the Kansas Real Estate Sales Agent Exams

You will have 4 hours to complete the entire Kansas Real Estate Salesperson Licensing exam. The exam is split up into two sections.

  1. The first section of the exam is the national section. You will have 2.5 hours to finish this section. You will need to answer at least 56/80 questions correctly to pass this section.
  2. The second section of the exam is the state section. You will have 1.5 hours to complete this section. You will need to answer at least 21/30 questions correctly to pass this section.

To schedule an appointment for the real estate exam:

  • Make a reservation by visiting PersonVUE.com or calling 800-359-9333. (Walk-in exams are not available.  A reservation needs to be made 24 hours before the desired exam date).

Once you arrive at the testing center you’ll need to present a completed Candidate Education Certifying Document (present in the back of the Pearson VUE candidate handbook) and have that document verified by Kaplan. This verification will serve as evidence that you have completed the prelicensing education requirements.

To pass the Kansas Real Estate Agent exam, you must achieve a score of 70% on each section of the exam.

After passing the exams, submit your results to the Kansas Real Estate Commission with the proper forms and fees on the Score Report issued by Pearson VUE.

Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check

Students who pass the exams must complete the fingerprinting process and background check. Simply, log in to your Pearson VUE account and select Kansas Fingerprint Appointment (Sales Only) from the exam list. From there you will be able to schedule and pay for your fingerprinting appointment.

Remember, to submit a fingerprint receipt with your license application to the Kansas Real Estate Commission.

Step 4: Apply for Your License with the Kansas Real Estate Division

To apply for your real estate license you must submit your application within 90 days of passing both exams and within 12 months of the date on which your prelicensing education was completed to the Kansas Real Estate Commission.
