How to Get a Real Estate License in Kansas

If you're considering starting a real estate career in Kansas, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Kansas City, Lawrence, Olathe, Overland Park, Topeka, or any other city in the state. You'll need to earn a Kansas real estate license.
To get your real estate license in Kansas, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete fingerprinting and background check
- Meet all educational requirements including scoring 70% or higher on each Kansas sales agent licensing exam
- Apply for your license with the Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC)
While the process to become a real estate agent is similar in most states, each state has unique steps and education requirements that must be followed. The four steps to becoming a Kansas real estate agent are as follows:
Step 1: Complete Educational Licensing Courses
How many education hours and which course you’ll need to complete vary depending on if you are licensed in another state or not.
- 30 hours for the Principles of Real Estate (not required for those licensed in another state).
- 30 hours for the Kansas Practice course.
Your education course(s) must be completed within 12 months of you submitting your real estate license application to the KREC.
Step 2: Pass the Kansas Real Estate Sales Agent Exams
- The first section of the exam is the national section. You will have 2.5 hours to finish this section. You will need to answer at least 56/80 questions correctly to pass this section.
- The second section of the exam is the state section. You will have 1.5 hours to complete this section. You will need to answer at least 21/30 questions correctly to pass this section.
- Make a reservation by visiting PersonVUE.com or calling 800-359-9333. (Walk-in exams are not available. A reservation needs to be made 24 hours before the desired exam date).
After passing the exams, submit your results to the Kansas Real Estate Commission with the proper forms and fees on the Score Report issued by Pearson VUE.
Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check
Remember, to submit a fingerprint receipt with your license application to the Kansas Real Estate Commission.
